I'm a huge fan of John Christopher's Tripods novels. Is there any news on when your audio version will be completed?

apparently the chances of having it done soon are becoming far more realistic now. the biggest challenge was in getting competent actors who sound like teenagers, as demanded by the story. however, we think we may be close to cracking that now, so this production could well be a few months away -- we're certainly extremely keen to get it produced.
nothing is certain. maybe.

As Witold says, we are very close to getting this produced. Now that I am actually teaching Drama full-time at a high school, it means I am actually in a position to maybe roping in a couple of my students to appear in the production as Will, Henry, and Beanpole.
The reason it's taking so long to get off the ground is that I definitely want to do a decent job of it - we could easily rush this, and have it turn out as half-arsed as elements in the BBC TV series were. I want this audio adaptation to be the definitive performed version, bar none. |

Can't wait. Sounds very promising indeed. I can understand your caution after all the BBC TV version had impressive visuals to fall back (which gave me nightmares when I was little). However as a fan of radio drama and the power of audio suggestion I think the potential is definitely there for the Tripods to be even scarier...

That's exactly right - the whole premise behind The Tripods, despite being a "rights of passage" story about teenagers, also has this wonderful suggestive subtext about the loss of identity, and the whole Invasion of the Bodysnatchers parallels can be even more scary on audio, when all you have is your imagination to describe the scenarios!

Witold,
Quote: Of course. This is just one of the things I am currently discussing in my own mind about ways in which to approach this. Other avenues available to me are approaching the local amatuer theatre group, of which there is a junior section, and seeing if anyone there wishes to join in. But we will get this thing recorded before Christmas! |

I've just found this thread and I must say I can't wait to hear how the production turns out.
I was wondering how you would cast the three young protagonists. Glad you've found a way to do it! Now what about the bits featuring French speaking characters? Have you found anyone who can do them, or are you going to have them speaking English in French accents? I await the outcome with obsessive interest! |
