One thing that interests me about audio productions is how do you really hook
the audience, the listener in? After all, you've just got the actors voices, a
range of sound effects and some incidental music to work with. In my view it
takes something special to cast that spell that keeps the listener intrigued;
the sum really has to be greater than the parts. And I think Epic Footnote
Productions first attempt, An Innocent Threat, achieves this much sought after
synthesis.
Released on World Who Fanvid Day, yes that day that will forever be etched in
our memories, An Innocent Threat does not include the Doctor in its cast of
characters but quite quickly it is clear the story is set in the familiar bounds
of the Who-universe. Discrete but clear references are made to time travel,
time travellers and being exiled and the situation one of the main characters,
"Noman" by name, is more than a little similar to the Third Doctors.
Quickly the canvas of the story is fleshed out, a young, troubled man named
"Sam" seems dazzingly bright but oddly bumbling at the same time. Events move
quickly although a, perhaps slightly too long, exposition by Noman fills in the
background for us. The production strikes an essential balance for any
Who-style drama; the correct interplay between action and intrigue. And yes, I
wanted to hear more when it finished!
Add to that jolly good production values, a surprisingly Paul McGann timbre to
Noman's voice and the odd touch of humour and we have a very impressive first
outing for Epic Foonote Productions. Let me know when the next production hits
the Net.
Cheers!
