Mark, you've asked us who our favourite character is, but who is your favourite and if you could only voice one character, which one would you choose?

Hi Mark, I'd like to add to Paul's question by asking you if you have a favourite song from the series so far? And if so which one?

A difficult question indeed! Nearly all these characters have a history with me going back over 20 years so all have a place in my affection.
I think my favourite as far as 'best character' and 'best acted' is Turnidus. I love him so much! Nick brings him to life so convincingly. He's just the sort of person you want around you at all times! Favourites to write for are Madame D, Gamak, Yztabub, Violet Cilla and Caelys. But I do have a real soft spot for Frag. She is so obviously NOT a sci-fi character which draws me to her more being that '49 yr old woman next door'. The dear sort you have that 3 minute sweet chat to in the queue at the supermarket and never see again! |

If I had to voice one! | ||

Hmmmmm - Can I make two choices here?
I love playing Gamak, because he is the 'straight man' and tends to get the action moving in a scene, not being hampered by comedy Conversely, I like playing Mydas for the opposite reason, he's a great comedy voice to do! Cindy is a good character to play but I find the voice increasingly difficult a I get older!! Teddy is more fun to write, just how perverse and revolting can he be? (he was only ever intended to be in a couple of eps!) |

I know what you mean about Frag, out of the four characters on the shuttle, the last one you would have suspected of joining the SOL crew would be Frag, which is one of the main reasons why she is one my favourites.
In fact all the characters are so different from the normal sci-fi characters, which is one of the main things that attracted me to the series. Paul |

Frag & Songs | ||

That was the intention and I'm glad it's succeeded. SO much of sci-fi (especially American stuff) has cliched characters with no quirkiness. Frag is so unlikely as a sci-fi character! Mind you, so are most the others I guess...(Madame D/Mydas/Hywel/Violet)
I hope that people find the characters although in some ways comedic, do have a various layers to them. In some ways I guess SOL is almost a 'soap' having 14 main characters! Re your question Nicky - I think my favourite comedy song is 'The Space Dentist' and my favourite ballad is 'Cindy's Song' |

Mark, you've certainly succeeded with the characters. They are such a diverse bunch that you just know that in normal circumstances they probably wouldn't get on, or even contemplate getting to know each other. But with all that they have been through that has made them stronger, and they have really bonded. I feel that is the real strength of the series - the characterisations. And yes, they certainly do have 'layers'.
Re: The Space Dentist Song... when I first heard it I wasn't sure that I liked it. However, on each subsequent listening (and I've probably listened to the CD about 8-10 times) I enjoy it more and more. In fact I think I can say that there is not one song in the whole series (so far!) that I don't enjoy listening to. Nicky _________________________________

Re: Diversity | ||

That was exactly what I wanted - a diverse bunch who are forced to become 'acquaintances' through a shared suffereing. Two of my favourite programmes 'Blakes Seven' and 'Tenko' dealt with this brilliantly and I've always loved shows that have that as a central theme.
I agree that in real life many of them would have avoided each other like the plague! I can't see Gamak and Cilla becoming such good friends or Frag & Turnidus becoming so close! |
