Overall the Special Edition is a superb piece of work. The score sounds very different without losing the flavour of the original. The new scenes are all in keeping (though I did feel that the cutaway to Ace and the Baby during the revelation scene detracted from the drama of the moment rather than added to it). The main improvement is definately the flow of the opening (episode). It's interesting that the commentary pulls up some of the technical failings of the original that have subsequently been improved in the SE - were they briefed on the improvements to be made I wonder? It would be nice to hear more production voices in the McCoy commentaries though. Cartmel or Ian Briggs would have been facinating - esp the former with his historically faily low interview profile.
I have to say in the end it was a good job that the tech notes (Martin in usual chatty style) and the commentary were on the TX eps as otherwise I would never have looked at them. Though I do feel deprived of the iso score on the extended - and surely a CD will only give us a stereo version of the wonderful surround work here?
The new doccu's, especially the work on the SE are very interesting and should be considered in some form or other for other releases with extensive rework.
I've always been something of a Fenric anorak and it's lovely to be reminded of how much I was enjoying Who again by this point (after struggling through the Saward period) - the new version removes some of the eightiesisms (the occasional Keffy orchestral stabs spring to mind). Maybe they should have gone the full hog and got rid of the theme and titles.... Any critics of the movie length idea could be silenced when the first sale is made for broadcast I suppose (but I'm not holding my breath). Fingers crossed.
