I can't quite work out who Mark was replying to with his comments about scores. Never mind! I can't say I agree that film and tv scores are the last form of 'classical' music! They are just a form that has it's own inbuilt advertising which makes it more accessible. I'm (generally) of the opinion that soundtrack music is background music. I have a fair few soundtracks and I put them on when I'm reading or writing or have visitors. I never turn them up and rock out. There's a problem with being a Doctor Who fan and interested in soundtracks... a lot of them are rubbish. They're just not good enough to listen to. Put on some proper music!!

Does one have to "rock out" to assert one's enjoyment of music? And why do people who have loud, basey music in cars that pass me always look so damn miserable? Different types of music have different places and different ways in which they work, and I'd agree that soundtrack music is good reading music. Music cues, which make up a lot of the Who soundtracks, don't really last long enough to work out of context. But something longer, more structured and more thematic - like, say, the Ron Grainer theme tune - can stand up on their own merits.

I don't want to be a musical snob here, but I always feel that the people playing 'loud, basey (bassy?)' music in their cars are somehow, er... less intelligent? Anyone who hasn't read the Ballads of Halo Jones by Alan Moore should check them out (because they're excellent!) They also have Alan's comment on this with the 'different drummers' who have a permanent beat implanted into their heads. Frightening to some, attractive to others? Come on then. Favourite music anyone?

Posts: 19 (10/24/03 01:03:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Answering the wrong question here, but The Ballad Of Halo Jones is my all-time favourite comic book (and, in case you don't know me, I have read an awful lot). Recommended to EVERYONE and finally available as a single collection from bookshops. At the time when it came out, 20 years ago, the idea of a permanent drum beat implanted in one's head seemed so scary - kind of the ultimate version of the then-new technology of the Walkman. Today, it seems disturbingly believable. Certainly, one starts to think that TV producers have the implants - is it really necessary to have permanent dance beats in the background to otherwise "grown-up" documentaries? One of the revelations of watching those early episodes of Blake's Seven is how LITTLE incidental music was used. You'd get a shot of a spaceship taking off for 90 seconds and all you'd hear was the engines. Simpler times for a more sophisticated audience, perhaps?

I started with Spider-Man Comics Weekly and then moved onto 2000ad. Then I followed the UK writers and artists when they all started working for the US comics. Got into Swamp Thing (of course), Sandman and Shade. Also veered off into The Spirit, American Flagg! (remember that one?), Doctor Strange, Ambush Bug and all the others, now taking up much space in the bottom of wardrobes. Then I stopped. It lost that spark and all the artists started to look the same. Lost track of my favourite writers. I don't find the originality, but I'm probably just skimming the surface these days. Alan Moore, Alan Davis, Kevin O'Neill (banned by the comics code authority!), Keith Giffen, Howard Chaykin, Will Eisner (still going, must be 80!), Ian Gibson, Pat Mills, Dave Gibbons, Dave McKean, Mick Austin.... Great days.

It's a wonderful piece of work, the sort of strip you want to go out and evangalise about to everyone you know once you've read it. Dramatic, funny, scary and ultimatlely moving, it is simultaneously an example of 2000AD's strengths with its droll satire and excellent artwork courtesy of Ian Gibbons, and yet its the antithesis of the hard-men-with-big-guns ethos of most of the strips. On top of that it gives us a believable future world where real people could live. "Halo Jones" is one of the great examples of British SF in any medium. With Alan Moore I sometimes think, "That's his best. No hang on - that's his best." The truth is, he's been able to create some of the best work in a multitude of fields. I'm currently reading borrowed copies of "The Sandman" and "League of Extraordianry Gentlemen". I have also bought the first issues of the two DW spin-offs "Miranda" and "Faction Paradox". Both look promising but are suffering from that perenial indie curse - irregular publishing dates. Plus the small press title "Nucomix", which I've mentioned here before. I like to catch up with more comics but trade paperbacks or decent runs of titles never seem to turn up secondhand around my area.

Now I remember what I was talking about! Certainly one of Alan Moore's best, although he never really short-changed us (Skizz?). I find that a lot of the reputation for Halo rests on Book 3. Certainly the best of the lot (as it should be, if not we'd have to say it got worse!). If it had finished after Book 2 I think it would be more remembered as zany-future girlies go shopping. Two standouts from Book 3 have to be episodes 6 and 7. (The death of Toy and Leavetaking) Amazing stuff. Carry on evangelising, Gareth. I wish I could find something as good as this being produced today. Guess I'll go and read D.R and Quinch (while listening to Tales from Topographic Oceans!!! what a trip)

I highly recommend ALIAS being published by Marvel Comics just now. Nothing to do with the TV show of the same name, "Alias" follows the adventures of a female private eye in the Marvel (superhero) Universe. It's intelligent, emotional and very definitely an 18 certificate. This puts superheroes into a very real world, without focusing on superheroics. The high concept pitch...? "VI Warshawski meets Captain America"? Alias is written by Brian Michael Bendis, who's responsible for a wealth of solid titles just now. I'd also recommend his current run on Daredevil, his take on Ultimate Spider-Man and his (Image published) Powers series, which is a fine companion to Alias. But start with Alias - it's very accessible and the most intelligent of the bunch. Three collections are available at the moment; try Amazon or any comic shop. Happy reading!

It was a lot easier to follow the good titles in the eighties, I simply bought 2000ad every week and when one of my favourite writers or artists started working on another title I followed them there! Do you know if they ever reprinted the Alan Moore Captain Britain strips?

I think Moore really sat better in the 2000ad camp - stuff like "DR & Quinch" and his Time Twisters/Future Shocks remain breathtaking.

I just visited the local library (in search of Kipper videos, but that's not the point). They only happen to have 2 groaning shelves of graphic novels. Free to peruse for 3 whole weeks at a time. No excuse now. No Alias, but I got League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol 1 (breaking myself back in gently) and a Neil Gaiman volume. I've got all the Daredevils/MWOM with Captain Britain in, just can't be bothered to trawl through the comic dungeon.

The collection has everything. But that's not the point... Kipper videos? Kipper rocks! Pig and Arnold are great. Skip the graphic novels - watch more Kipper! By the way, there's a new Mighty World Of Marvel from Marvel UK. It's running Frank Miller's Dardevil run, some really old Hulk material and a third rotating strip. Not brilliant but certainly a nostalgia buzz to see a new MWOM after all these years.

It'd be a bit more of an analogue system, rather than what we understand as a programme but maybe the Dr was just refering to the pretty lines. Runes are more like pictograms or oriental language symbology and not strictly speaking 'letters' as we know them, although they are attached to sounds.

The plot makes excellent sense as a fable, with Omega's tragic, ironic plight and mythic stature making an excellent reason three Doctors to come together. The banter between the Doctor's is still very entertaining and it's great to see a fully-fledged Troughton working with UNIT in colour. Even the ludricrous Gel Guards can't stop this one being entertaining. But its the interview material which really makes this a great DVD. The Mighty Trout's impish appearence on Pebble Mill, whilst Bernard Wilkie is putting up with Alan Partridge's older brother. The Panopticon 93 panel (I was there y'know) had some good observations and a skittish Katy Manning. The BSB clips were worthwhile too, if only for the nostalgia of remembering a decent satellite broadcaster. Another winning DVD from the Restoration Team. PS. The cool Bessie model is great freebie. Mine will soon be appearing in Dad's garden railway.

She can't seem to remember too much that wasn't obvious (It was so cold) and so she compensates by doing silly voices and flattering Courtney alot. But she wasn't nearly as annoying as the Hines/Watling commentary on "Tomb" or Janet Fielding on "Earthshock".

B7Enterprises, the company set up to revive the series three years ago on which Paul Darrow has just walked out (knowing now that they are a waste of space) have been holding up the releases because they weren't consulted on them in the first place. Because they argue that DVD's are interactive and they have rights to computer games they have somehow got some approval rights. So they've finally allowed the releases to go ahead - but omitting the Kevin Davies doccumentary apparently because it wasn't enuf of a tribute to Terry Nation! Refer to the Terry Nation thread below if you want to deduce my feelings about this.
