When will the madness end!
PS. the Pyramids of Mars release looks excellent with a Philip Hinchcliffe doc, a making of, deleted scenes and a spoof documentary.

Re: BLAKES 7 on DVD | ||

I meant to respond to this earlier. What stupidity is this? This bloke who owns the rights to new Blake's 7 has turned out to be a kind of anti-King Midas. Without the Kevin Smith documentaries, the box set looks decidedly skimpy, with only three commentaries and not much else. Unlike the more obscure "Survivors", B7 has been out on video twice in all the chain stores and shown almost continually on UK Gold, so most fans will have the series already. These kind of releases need their extras even more. I wouldn't have bought the DW DVD's so quickly if they had been the stories alone.

Visitation is nice all the pre Warriors of the Deep stuff from 2" tape still looks lovely when you get it on DVD even if the story is a little less than a classic. Nice set nice extras all wrapped up in the worst ever cover ever - not Claytons fault apparently. He submitted his usual stuff and the cut and pasted some other photo's over the top. You can still see his original Davison shot under the new one (the question mark is the right way round underneath the new one where it is mirrored).
They've still to beat Earhshock for the quality of the extras but this is very watchable and the commentary is a complete actors pisstake which is fine when the alterntive is a Director who can remember nothing. Is it me or Did Peter Moffat get worse with every story he did? |

Three excellent choices there I think, apart from the fact there are no sixties stories.
"Green Death" is part of the public consiousness and its a good example of the UNIT family, a much better story for them than "Three Doctors". "The Leisure Hive" will sound even better in a 5.1 mix and its a glossy, clever adventure. And "Ghost Light" is an atmospheric tale with lots of potential for extras. Gaz |

Re: New DVD's | ||

I suppose the McCoys are tempting to release because they have more extras, full soundtracks exist to play with, people still alive to interview.
However, they're once again falling into the trap of ending up with lots of Hartnells and Bakers (and Pertwees by the looks of it) left to release at the end. A bit more forward planning this time, hopefully, would keep us all happy. The Key to Time box set was a great idea to get rid of a big lump of Bakers, but never released in the UK! I'm pleased Green Death is there, they've so far managed to release the only three Pertwees I've done to death. Spearhead, bought five times and repeated. Carnival and Three Doctors, the only two Pertwees I had for several years! Leisure Hive is a brilliant choice. |

Though Green Death is yet another Pertwee that has been repeated (twice I think, in fact).
I agree that we seem to be flooded with Davisons. It really should be a Hartnell, Pertwee, Tom Baker and 'one of the others' in rotation to get any kind of spread. I think. |

The Visitation | ||

Watched most of The Visitation DVD last night. It's a perfectly formed adventure. At first I felt it was insubstantial but then I remembered how excited I was by it back 1982, with its monsters, robots and history which I had learnt at school. Its strength is its simplicity, anyone can watch the story and enjoy it on its own terms.
The documentaries are all pretty good, especially the Eric Saward one with some insightful comments. I'd disagree that Peter Moffat declined with each story. In fact he does an excellent job, just sometimes with rather poor ingrediants. The commentary is a definite improvement on the Earthshock one and I especially liked their memories of Michael Bates. The easter egg of continuity anouncments is a neat touch for completism. This quality range continues. |

Re: The Visitation | ||

Dont get me wrong. I think that State of Decay in particular is wonderfully directed and Visitation too has nice touches, by Mawdryn I think we're into the 'can we finish early today Peter' kind of thing. And the good bits of the Five Doctors seem to be from JNT's second unit. Twin Dilemma is very dull from a direction POV with nothing new to try to save the day from the terrible script. And with the Two Doctors (which is a good script I feel) I wonder if Peter actually went to New Oreans by mistake! Slow and plodding, longshots on action scenes, gaps while we wait for lines and the terrible misjudged atmosphere and emphasis on Oscars death to round off his final episode.

I watched most of Pyramids yesterday. If you fancy a pound less and a week late then try DVD.CO.UK.
Pretty much the benchmark release so far. Classic story (I think maybe I forgot just how good it is due to all the video releases and repeats), great extras. The Hinchcliffe documentary made me realise just how great he was. Let's all get voting for Deadly Assassin and Seeds of Doom in next year's DWM poll! Although I still love those clips from Pertwees (Terror of the Autons - did that look more cleaned up than the video release..?) Oh Mummy was okay, I suppose... allright, I laughed at 'Neil before the might of Sutekh.' Just one tiny, nagging doubt. Did the picture quality of the main feature look not quite as good as on previous releases...? Convince me I'm wrong, please. |

Bit of a Who-ha at the moment sice it was revealed that the bitrate for the extras was higher than that for the main feature.
How utterly stupid! I wonder how many authoring errors the authoring house need to make before the Beeb sack them and get a new one. The must be cheap is all I can think. |

Well I thought that Talons would remain the definitive Tom DVD for a while but no! Pyramids is simply one of the best releases yet in the range.
What a great story it is. Watching this again was like discovering it anew after getting blase about my old VHS copy. I won't bother listing all the factors that make it one of the top ten stories in the canon, because wiser heads than I have done that. However one factor that did strike me was the acting. Playing Doctor Who straight is a good base for a performance, but the best actors add just a thin layer of relish to their performances. It's a delicate balance, and can tip into comic strip but this is a show that needs its slightly larger than life characters. The commentary is the best since Androzani for mixing insights with annecdotes. As it happens, having Paddy Russell make a little lecture from time to time (unable to join the others due to arthritis) only reinforces the impression of the headmistress / student relation the others remember. Two splendid documentaries with not much to choose between them. Hopefully Serial Thrillers will be joined by future era retrospectives. Oh Mummy! didn't quite live up to the hype but it made me smile. But having Gabriel Woolf back for the voice was perfect. My own favourite bit was probably Sutekh as a milkman. Deleted scenes for something of this age is rather remarkable too. In short, this could already be the DVD of the year! Gaz |

Quite liked "Green Death". Had that eco-horror (Doomwatch, but not done as pants) air about it.
Latest rumour on the who's Who topic? That beak nosed slender guy I see everywhere and who's a decent actor but a bit of a surprise for this. He was the policeman that Robert Carlysle's 'Albie' character killed in "Cracker". You know the one. The excellent story they won't repeat cos it's a bit too good. What? You expect me to remember his name?! |
