The Doctor is back and it really feels like a new series starting up. That's the best effect in this opening episode, for me it had that indefinable Whoishness about it.

At first I wasn't sure about REG's Doctor. He seemed a bit distant, not quite understanding what he was saying. However by the end I was completely won over. This is a Doctor who's tetchy and bitter, but soon he shows that he cares deeply about the lives of everyone around him and wants to make a difference. Alison, his new companion, makes a good impression in her debut as well. She's the traditional girl, active, brave and curious. But yes her real life alter ego does have a bit of a squint in those video clips.

Intriguing, mysterious opening episode by Paul Cornell with a promising new monster and good cliffhanger. Only two incredibly dumb men at the start ring a wrong note. "Hey it's an alien worm! Let's touch it!"

The flash animation is very easy to get into and was pretty smooth on my 56k connection. Some neat effects, such as the lightning around the TARDIS as it arrived. I like the new arrangement of the theme too, whilst Russell Stone's incidentals are very evocative.

In all a great start for a new Doctor. And it makes me wonder about a Flash animated Agents of Psyence story. Hmm only my complete lack of time, money and drawing skill stand in my way

It's definitely more animated than Shada, especially the faces. I think being able to watch it in comfort on DVD will definitely help. Having to download it in sections does not make for stress-free viewing.
But that's a compromise for the current state of the internet. The stylised film noir art works in favour of the Flash animation. I liked the robust, clever script and I didn't think the delivery was any more stilted than an audio.

Watched the final episode at the weekend and it brought the story to a pretty satisfying end. Lovely emotional solution in which The Doctor can only win by getting all the humans to work together, thus making it a triumph of humanity over the forces of death. The smug Prime gets an appropriate comeuppance. REG's Doctor has been well established and I'd love to have some more adventures for him, though I suppose a potental TV version makes that less likely. The new Brigadier substitute has grown on me a lot as well. Best line of this episode, after the Doctor has asked Alison for about the sixth time in this story if she trusts him, she sighs and replies "How needy are you? YES!"
Technically this has been a great advert for Flash, producing very watchable animation (subject to internet connection).
So when the DVD appears (fingers crossed) it's well worth picking up. The novelisation should be interesting too. Apparently a DVD will be in addition to the Doctor Who range, rather than replacing a title.
In all, a good advert for new Who.
