in which case, i'd very much like to request a full news page spread advertising the forthcoming release of a financial maths teaching resource book i'm co-writing. that is, assuming all's fair.

"shameless cross promotion" is right! as much as it's fair enough for someone who's worked on the "soldiers of love" titles to want to promote them, i find it a considerable stretch to view ad advert for someone else's productions as btr news! and it's especially shameless because there's a perfectly good btr doco waiting in the wings, ready to be released whenever our producer may see fit. which, evidently, is not before plugging his other work first!
in which case, i'd very much like to request a full news page spread advertising the forthcoming release of a financial maths teaching resource book i'm co-writing. that is, assuming all's fair. nothing is certain. maybe.

I have to say Witold's request for a front page ad, just doesn't add up.
I have this feeling, people may hit me for such a awful pun, but it just had to be said. But yeah, I hate to say it, SOF 11, isn't really BTR news (but then again, same could be said, when the release of Will Hadcroft's book came out, and that made front page news as well... I'd ask for a full page advert of what I cooked for dinner last night, but that'd just be silly... Cheers Scott. |

Re: Front Page ads | ||

the reason i didn't complain when the "anne droyd" ad went up was chiefly because matt likes to have an update every week (something i have to complaint with, though i with he'd hit the advertised date of some of these updates a bit more accurately!), will has a link to btr, and the product was sf and therefore of potential interest to our audience.
matt, too, has a link to btr (obviously!), and "soldiers" is also sf, but my objection comes from the fact that far more relevant material exists (in matt's hands), which can be uploaded and announced. even putting aside the doco i mentioned (and i suspect i know why matt's put it aside), matt has a superior mpeg copy of the "time to go home" blooper reel which he intends to encode in the equally superior realmedia g3 (i think it's g3...) format some time soon. okay, so it's just a blooper reel and i still haven't given him a fresh copy of the film itself, but at least it has a little more to do with btr than the current update. incidentally, i hope my verbosity doesn't make my complaint seem bigger than it is. it's genuinely a minor little point i wanted to make, but then i do tend to go on a bit, don't it...? nothing is certain. maybe.

Quote:Considering that Will Hadcroft is writing the scripts of our Tripods adaptation for us, I thought it was quite fair that BTR plugged Anne Droyd and Century Lodge -- if only as a good deed in return for the favour he's paid us. I dare say it would also be fair to see advertising for the various other groups we've done co-production work with, or who've at least lent us their talents, for similar reasons. Maybe Matthew plugging Soldiers of Love doesn't quite fit that bill, and I think that may have been the original point of Witold's post -- fair enough. I'm not going to ask for any silly, irrelevant things to be posted instead, though. "Even Time Lords die." www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/death |

Got very little time to deal with this post, but just a few points I would like to make:
(a) The reason I made the update last Friday the one being discussed is because I like to update our web site once a week, but last week I was so stupidly busy that I had absolutely zero time to write an update proper. So, knowing that Soldiers of Love was being released last weekend, I thought it might be nice to post a short piece of advertising (which only took me about 60 seconds to write and upload - all the time I had available to make last Friday's update!) on the site which may be of interest to people who visit our web site. If it ain't your cup of tea, then just ignore it - you know it'll be gone within 7 days. Hopefully today's update is more to everyone's taste. (b) I am currently waiting on a re-mastered copy of Deep Undercurrents from Witold before I upload the new video documentary that he discusses in his posts. That's why it's not gone up yet - because I want to link them both in together with one update. Get people watching the new doco, and then possibly going back and re-watching the new re-mastered version of the film. As for the Time To Go Home bloopers - well, I know I asked Witold for a new copy of the film, but not the bloopers. The copy of the bloopers I have here are already perfect, it's just the copy of the film itself I have that stinks. When I get the correct file (and to give credit to Witold, this is most likely the first he's heard about this from me - but in my defence, I have been rather busy these past 8 weeks...) I will upload that as well. (c) Could I possibly ask that any criticism about the way I run the BTR web site, or indeed any facet of BTR in general, please be kept to the BTR Writers Group? Simply because I don't think it's a good idea to air our dirty laundry in public - I'm sure there are several people (who shall remain nameless) who are more than likely reading this thread with stifled giggles... (d) Ignoring Scott's attempt at humour, if Witold wishes me to advertise his forthcoming mathematics text book on this site, then I am more than happy to do so. You've gotta remember what one of the roles of this site is - part of the reason it exists is to keep people outside of BTR informed about what people inside of BTR are doing. Hence last year me running ads for Volume 10 of Soldiers of Love, Anne Droyd & Century Lodge, not to mention a few of the Eclectica Press releases. I just think it's nice to do this, because I know of several people involved in BTR who have their own small legions of "fans", who are probably hoping I keep this small ad-service running... Just some food for thought... I now return you to your regularly scheduled programme, and me to my @#%$ uni work. God I can't wait for this year to be over! :-( When I die, I want to go peacefully just like my grandfather did - in his sleep. Not screaming like the other passengers in his car.

Quote:Fair point, but it does rather defeat the purpose of having a "Web site" category here -- particulary if a "should we be running this ad" concern is going to be taken as a cue for yet another flamewar. You're the only one with the admin tools to fix this, as far as I know. Your call. "Even Time Lords die." www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/death |

i'd like to point out that i put my original post on this forum for the very reason david suggests: the "web site" section is set aside for discussion of the web site. okay, so the potted description seems to only cover bugs, which is a little constraining, so perhaps i should've put my post under "general discussion", which is where we can "Chat about anything under the sun. We don't mind - just remember to be polite!". (to my knowledge, i haven't been not polite thus far.)
if this has appeared to turn into some sort of a conflict, then i apologise for initiating said conflict, because one certainly wasn't intended. why did i not post to the writers group? two reasons. first, it's hard to know how successful email-related communications to matt will be, given his current busy schedule. second, i just plain didn't see any reason to: the writers group is for discussion of production issues. matt's coverage of why no other items were used for the update has satisfied me (i'm assuming he had neither the time nor the resources for putting up the tmht music last week), and so any complaint i may have had in the first place has been satisfactorily addressed. conflict? i see no reason for any. people sniggerring in the background? why should they? do they seriously expect the script editor to be consulted on every web design issue before it's implemented? i can assure you, matt, if they're sniggerring now, then they always have been and always will be, and i suspect it comes more down to their own attitudes than our means of communication. (in short -- and speaking more broadly -- i don't self-censor to absurd levels for the sake of idiots.) nothing is certain. maybe.

Howdy all.
With my (admittedly sarcastic) response to Witold's comments, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I like Witold thought it was a little unusual to promote a quite large and (unlike BTR) profitable production on a fan site. Matt, you're in charge of whatever goes up on the site, and I'm quite sure that I have no sway in whatever will appear on it. I didn't want to offend yourself, and I by no means meant to. While I don't have both Uni and work at the same time, I do work a quite demanding job, and I can understand the pressures of time restraints. As noted in my original post, I was just being silly. Again, appologies to all offended parties. Cheers Scott. |
